Their mother’s will sends Jeanne and Simon after two people they thought were lost—or never knew existed. The production is part of a five-play project exploring how theatre texts keep evolving.

A twin-led search for family truth inside a five-play theatre project

Five plays, five directors, one evolving-text project

Five plays and five celebrated directors shape Quad, Questions of Theatre: Evolving Texts, a project centered on how plays can speak anew across eras. Its range reaches from Shakespeare to modern drama and contemporary Korean theatre, with directors Ara Kim, Kwang-Bo Kim, Woo-Ok Kim, Seong-Yeol Lee and Tae-Sook Han at the helm. Scorched is one of the five, so keep an eye on how this production brings its text into the present 🎭

The project puts the text itself in the spotlight, using these works to explore theatre now and what it might become. For Scorched, that means a story rooted in war and massacre, with a family’s search drawing attention to cycles of hatred and the force of love chosen through will. If you only have time for one thing, make it the twins’ journey: it’s the thread that leads into the play’s questions of violence, responsibility and human dignity.

A mother’s will sends the twins searching

Jeanne and Simon are twins who’ve spent five years in silence. After their mother Nawal dies, her will leaves them with an astonishing task: find their father, whom they believed dead, and a brother they never knew about, then deliver letters to them. She also asks to be buried without a coffin or headstone. That’s a lot to take in, isn’t it? 😮

The twins set out to follow the traces Nawal left behind, and the more they learn about her past, the closer they come to a shocking truth about her silence. The production reworks the Greek tragedy of Oedipus as a modern myth, expanding a personal family tragedy into a confrontation with human dignity. Scorched is a paid performance, so check the ticket details before you go; Daehakro Theater Quad is a performing arts theatre, with other theatres nearby if you’re planning an outing in the area 🧭
