About this place

Three gates lead from Gwanghwamun to the palace's heart 🏯

After it burned in the Imjin War, Gyeongbokgung Palace went unrepaired for more than 270 years—what a gap in the story! 😮 Built in 1395, it was reconstructed from 1865 to 1867. During the Japanese colonial period, most of its halls were dismantled and the Japanese Government-General building was erected, damaging the palace grounds. Restoration of several areas began in 1995, and the work is planned to continue through 2045.

From outside the palace, pass through Gwanghwamun, Heungnyemun, and Geunjeongmun to reach Geunjeongjeon. The three gates and three courts—outer, inner, and rear—make the route toward the palace center easy to follow. Take a look at the platform and sculptures around Geunjeongjeon, too; they offer a glimpse of the period's sculptural art. 👀

Gyeonghoeru and Hyangwonjeong sit beside ponds that remain in their original form, while Bugaksan rises behind the palace to the north. Geoncheonggung served as the residence of King Gojong and Empress Myeongseong. The crown prince's quarters, known as Donggung, included Jaseondang and Bihyeongak for daily life and education. Spotting the different roles of each hall is part of the fun, so take your time as you walk. 🌿

Through three gates

Pass Gwanghwamun, then Heungnyemun and Geunjeongmun, to reach Geunjeongjeon. Keep the three-gate, three-court layout in mind: the route moves through the outer, inner, and rear courts toward the palace center. 🏯

Halls with different roles

Geunjeongjeon hosted royal enthronement ceremonies, while Gyeonghoeru was used for banquets for foreign envoys and officials. Gangnyeongjeon and Gyotaejeon, the king's and queen's sleeping quarters, are connected; Jagyeongjeon was the residence of the grand queen dowager. The crown prince's Donggung included Jaseondang and Bihyeongak for living and study. 👀

Hours and admission

The palace is closed on Tuesdays, except when a public holiday or substitute holiday falls on a Tuesday; in that case, it opens and closes on the first following non-holiday. Hours and last admission change by season, so check the schedule for your visit date. Adult individual admission is 3,000 won, and some age groups enter free. 🙂
