One of Korea’s few seaside temples, with the sea, a dragon and Gwanseeum Bosal all woven into its story!? Haedong Yonggungsa sits on the coast in Gijang, Busan, and is a sacred site for Gwanseeum Bosal worship 🌊

There’s plenty to see around the grounds: Daeungjeon, Gulbeopdang, Yongwangdang and Beomjonggak. Beside Daeungjeon, Gulbeopdang is a cave shrine that houses a seated stone Maitreya Buddha. It’s also called Deuknam Buddha because people pray there for children 🙏 The four-lion stone pagoda stands in front of Daeungjeon, too.

A story about the temple’s name tells of a dream in which Gwanseeum Bosal, dressed in white, rose into the sky riding a dragon 🐲 Admission is free, and the temple is open year-round. Plan your visit between 04:30 and 20:30, and you can park right beside the temple.

Sights around the grounds

Beside Daeungjeon, the main hall, is Gulbeopdang, a cave shrine with a seated stone Maitreya Buddha. People pray there for children, which is why the statue is also called Deuknam Buddha 🙏 The four-lion stone pagoda stands in front of Daeungjeon, and Yongwangdang and Beomjonggak are among the other buildings to see.

Before you visit

The temple is open 04:30~20:30 every day of the year, and admission is free. There’s parking right beside the temple 🚗
