More than 20 theaters once clustered in Nampo-dong!? The district began with just one or two theaters after Korea’s liberation on August 15, then grew to that number in the 1960s 🎞️ On September 13, 1996, the first Busan International Film Festival opened; the theater district was refurbished for the festival and given the name BIFF Square.

BIFF Square was a main stage for the festival’s early eve-of-festival events and handprint ceremonies featuring famous film figures 🙌 After Yeonghwaui Jeondang opened in Haeundae, major events such as the opening ceremony moved there. The early festival traces remain here, though, and films are still screened in the area. Want to spot a piece of the festival’s beginnings? Keep an eye out for the handprints.

Today, theaters showing new releases share this lively street with shopping and sightseeing. In the evening, neon lights and street food add to the bustle, with snacks such as tteokbokki and seed hotteok 😋 One thing to time carefully: food stalls and shops start closing early at night, so explore before it gets too late. Then take a stroll through the theater district and see what you find!

From theaters to BIFF Square

After Korea’s liberation on August 15, Nampo-dong’s theater district began with one or two theaters. By the 1960s, more than 20 had gathered here 🎬 When the first Busan International Film Festival opened on September 13, 1996, the district was refurbished and named BIFF Square. Keep that history in mind as you walk from the old theater district to the festival-era name.

Early festival traces

BIFF Square was a main stage for early festival eve events and handprint ceremonies featuring famous film figures 🤩 Major events have since moved to Yeonghwaui Jeondang, but traces of the festival’s early years and film screenings remain here. Look for the handprints and theaters to get a sense of the festival’s history on this street.

Theaters and an evening stroll

The street brings together theaters showing new releases, shopping and sightseeing 🛍️ In the evening, neon lights and street food add to the lively feel, and you may find snacks such as tteokbokki, seed hotteok, dumplings and dalgona. Food stalls and shops start closing early at night, so head over before it gets too late if you want time to explore and grab a bite.
