Buddhist temple

About this place

A huge lotus field and summer festival await at Bongseonsa 🌿

4.5 · 2,878 reviews · GOOGLE_MAPS

A 1,000-pyeong lotus field inside a temple—now that’s a flower spot with serious scale! When the lotuses bloom in summer, Bongseonsa Yeonkkot Festival brings a Buddhist cultural festival to the grounds, too. Come for the flowers and take in the temple’s cultural treasures along the way 🌸

Bongseonsa was founded in 969 as Unaksa, then took its current name in 1469, during the reign of King Yejong. It became a temple where prayers were offered for King Sejo after his tomb was moved to Gwangneung; the name Bongseonsa means “serving the former king.” A little name history to carry with you as you wander the grounds 📜

Bongseonsa is the headquarters of the 25th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and a major center of the doctrinal school. After being destroyed and restored several times, it became the temple complex seen today. Look for the designated treasures—the Namyangju Bongseonsa Bronze Bell and the Namyangju Bongseonsa Vairocana Three-Buddha Hanging Painting—as well as the registered cultural heritage Big Beopdang. Visit during the summer bloom and pair the lotus field with a look at the temple’s heritage 🙏

Lotuses and a summer festival

The lotus field covers 1,000 pyeong! When the lotuses are in full bloom in summer, Bongseonsa Yeonkkot Festival brings a Buddhist cultural celebration inspired by the flowers. Time your visit for the bloom and you can see the field and festival together 🪷

The story in the name

Founded in 969 as Unaksa, Bongseonsa took its current name in 1469. It became a temple for prayers after King Sejo’s tomb was moved to Gwangneung, and its name carries the meaning “serving the former king.” Keep that history in mind as you explore the grounds 📜

Temple treasures

Bongseonsa is home to the designated Treasure No. 397, the Namyangju Bongseonsa Bronze Bell, and Treasure No. 1792, the Namyangju Bongseonsa Vairocana Three-Buddha Hanging Painting. The Big Beopdang is Registered Cultural Heritage No. 522. Add these heritage sights to your lotus-field visit 🔎
