About this place

A 5.74-kilometer fortress with its main gate in the north 🧭

4.6 · 9,199 reviews · GOOGLE_MAPS

The north gate, Janganmun, is the main gate?! 😮 Suwon Hwaseong’s gates were arranged so the king would be welcomed first at the north gate, rather than the south. The fortress wall stretches 5.74 kilometers, so even the placement of a gate has a story worth knowing before you set off.

King Jeongjo built the fortress from 1794 to 1796 in honor of Crown Prince Sado. Its story is also tied to moving Crown Prince Sado’s tomb to Suwon Hwasan. Built to fit the terrain, it combines features of a walled town and a mountain fortress, with both military defense and commercial functions 🧐 It was restored using the designs and records in the Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Along the wall, you’ll find four main gates as well as hidden gates, bastions, artillery platforms, and a beacon tower. Compare Janganmun in the north with Paldalmun in the south, Hwaseomun in the west, and Changnyongmun in the east 🚶 Hwahongmun, the north water gate over Suwoncheon, has seven arches; from its pavilion, the arches, spray, and surrounding scenery come together in one view 💧

Why the north gate?

There’s one main gate in each direction, but the main entrance is Janganmun in the north. The gate layout was designed to welcome the king first there—a fun detail that makes Suwon Hwaseong distinctive 👀 Janganmun has an arched entrance in a granite-stone wall, topped by a two-story gate pavilion.

Four gates, four looks

Paldalmun in the south carries the meaning of roads opening in all directions, and has a crescent-shaped outer wall and defensive structures on either side. Compare it with Hwaseomun in the west and Changnyongmun in the east to see how the four gates differ in name and position 🧱 The wall also has outer walls, hidden gates, bastions, artillery platforms, and a beacon tower.

Hwahongmun over Suwoncheon

Hwahongmun, the north water gate over Suwoncheon, was built to help manage floods. Its pavilion stands above seven arches, where the spray, arches, and surrounding scenery come together in view 🌊 As you explore the wall, take a moment to notice this pairing of water gate and pavilion.
