About this place

One dragon-shaped rock, two legends, and a coastal route to explore 🐲

Two legends for one rock!? 😮 Start by looking at the volcanic rock on Jeju’s north coast, near Jeju Airport. Waves and wind shaped it over time into a form said to resemble a dragon’s head, giving Yongduam Rock its name. See what you make of the shape from beside the sea.

One tale says a dragon stole a jade bead belonging to a spirit of Hallasan, was struck by an arrow, and fell to the shore. Its body sank into the water while its head stayed pointed skyward, where it turned to stone. Another story tells of a white horse that longed to rise into the sky, was caught by a general, and became a rock right there. Two very different paths to becoming stone, huh? 🤭

After exploring the rock and its stories, take the Yongdam-Dodu Coastal Road toward Dodu Port. The route continues past Iho Beach and Hagwi Beach to Aewol-eup, with cafés and restaurants along the way. Pick how far you want to follow the coast, then set off 🚗

Two tales behind the rock

A dragon fleeing with a stolen jade bead and a white horse longing for the sky: two legends are attached to Yongduam Rock 🐲 In the dragon story, its body sinks into the sea while its head remains pointed skyward, frozen in stone. Take in the rock’s shape, then see which tale comes to mind.

Follow the coastal road

From Yongduam Rock, follow the Yongdam-Dodu Coastal Road toward Dodu Port. It continues past Iho Beach and Hagwi Beach to Aewol-eup, with cafés and restaurants along the route. Decide how far you’d like to go before you set out 🚙
